Statement of intent

How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief?

STATEMENT OF INTENT - MAGAZINE'S

My brief is to produce the front covers and the contents page(s) of the first two editions of a new lifestyle magazine aimed at an aspirational audience between the age of 16 and 25. My research into lifestyle magazines shows that most of them are gender targeted and I have decided to target male readers because I have more access to this demographic to conduct research. Discussion with my target audience shows that they are interested in Music, Sports, Film and T.V., Gaming and Gadgets, but I will be including a political section as I think that this will appeal to a certain group of aspirational young men. My magazine covers will need to have strong images using lighting in a dynamic way, at least one catchy sell line and a range of simpler sell lines to imply that there is plenty of content in the magazine. I have decided to use an older man on the front cover of my first magazine to establish the idea of aspiration. They will be something like a sportsman, actor or film director, so that the reader will see them as aspirational. My second cover will feature a younger male, so that the audience have someone to identify with. My research into contents pages suggests that they are easily navigated to help readers to take a non-linear approach to reading, but that they use images to suggest that the content is interesting. My contents page will be unusual, using a very busy arrangement of images layered on each other to suggest that the magazine is filled with a wide variety of content. I will ensure that most images are original content, including gaming footage, studio photos and pictures of locations and gadgets, but film still will be found images that are heavily manipulated.

STATEMENT OF INTENT - WEBSITE

The website will have a distinct house style from the magazine. It will have a crossover of content, and there will be elements of familiar design in the header, but the style will be quite different to acknowledge the different readership. The website will contain adverts due to the need to make revenue in a different way to the magazine and will have a much wider range of found images which is in keeping with my research. Most of the websites I have looked at are very busy with content and the homepage is like a ‘shop window’ for the website with many small images suggesting to the reader that there is a wide range of content. My second page will be an exclusive interview that links back to the magazine and will feature only video in this section. I will also have a video on my first page to show that the website has a wide range of different ways to interact. This will also help to establish a distinctive identity for the website.

How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent nature of your media production?

The most obvious link will be the use of the same range of content. The header on the website will feature the same elements as the contents page and there will be some same elements of content. For example, I will include a video review of a gadget that will be linked in the contents page of one of the magazines and the cover story will be featured in a short video interview. The magazine will contain a general call to action featuring images of people using the website on their phone or laptop and the website will contain a place to subscribe to the magazine.

Front cover and contents page

Plan of what I will include:

I did further planning over the past weeks of research into other magazine types and techniques. Some magazines that i have looked at are empire, vogue and esquire.

Also as its a younger audience I will be making my magazine cost 2 pounds as these individuals will not have a lot of money or may not have a stable source of income.

As a Minnie call-to-action on the front page and contents pages it will feature a free gift to entice the audience to read what is in the magazine and purchase it, and a peice of text saying that the readers should try the website. I have also done further research into my audience. The audience which i have to tailor for is a hard audience as it has many different interests but several interests still come up and that is gaming, film, news and politics which I have Incorporated into my magazine.

As an aspiration figure im planning on having two people who are of upper class and are around the same age as my audience to act as an avatar and aspiration figure, they will also feature on the first page of the contents page.

For continuity between the website and magazine, I will feature a few stories and headlines from the website in the contents pages and magazines, as well as the Eklypse exclusive will be in one of the magazines as well as the website.

Roughly what im wanting it to have and look like:

I want the model on the front page to be behind the masthead as its a new magazine I can't get away with putting the model in front of it as no one knows this new magazine.

I want the model to be looking into the camera as they will then look as if they are looking at the audience.

Course work 1 (camera research)

The camera im going to use is a camera model-finepix s4300

What the dials signify on the top of the camera.

Showed me in detail what some of the dials/camera settings looked like.

What I learned? Shutter priority, how long it takes for the camera to take a photo. The quicker its taken the better quality of the photograph. I also learnt about appeture which is to do with the lens of the camera. Each camera on the front has information of how far the lens can open and close. If the lens were to be in f/1.8 the focused objects background would be very blurry, but if it were in f/22 the object and background will both be clearly visible. (iso)

With the information that I learnt I took a number of pictures as practise. However the camera that I had would not blur the backgrounds of the pictures taken even though I followed the instructions of the photographer experts. Which has brought to me that the camera in my possession isn’t powerful enough for what i want it to do.

the image here was taken in a sunny enviroment, the camera unfortunatly wasn't able to capture the image in a high quality.

this background of this image here was blurred using photo shop showing what i wanted the camera to do originally.

Teacher Feedback:

  1.  Quicker shutter speed doesn't mean a 'better' picture (what does "better" even mean???).  I've seen some epic pictures taken with long shutter speeds.
  2. Quicker shutter speed allows in less light so pictures will be darker - a bit like the picture of you by the wall.  Longer shutter speed will give brighter pictures but any movement can cause issues.  But aperture also affects the amount of light that comes into the camera and F-Stop settings  also need to be considered.
  3. Look at these links (the second one even has a picture excatly like you want to achieve)
  1. BBQ Pictures - first one is fuzzy and I'd guess it's down to the camera moving.  Second one looks like it's out of focus.  Remember that focus can be manual or auto and which you use will depend on how much control you want.
  1. Nice work in Photoshop to blur the background in the picture of you but I'd suggest a bigger patern in the background.  The small house bricks with the cement in between are hard to blur enough to get the effect you want befre they turn into a generic mush.  I'd suggect bigger blocks like a chuch wall or breeze blocks, or maybe even a fence.

We'll do some work on this when we get back from Wales as I have managed to achieve exactly what you want on the camera we have here, but not on my first or second attempt.  It took a fair few goes with tweaking the settings each time.  This stuff takes some people years to master.
